Graphene Coated Condensers for a Greener Future

The idea is to use a novel graphene coating process we designed to implement graphene to the outside of cooling water pipes in pre-existing and future condensers. Graphene coated condensers would allow for higher efficiency, reduced costs, and minimized environmental footprint of power plants. Another application would be to greatly reduce the capital costs of future desalinization plants, as well as making existing ones more efficient. A graphene coating is able to deliver this increase in efficiency due to its intrinsic hydrophobicity that causes drop wise condensation of steam to occur instead of inefficient film wise condensation. When water forms a thin layer around the condenser pipes in filmwise condensation, it acts as a barrier to heat transfer due to poor heat conductivity.
