To address the growing concern of energy and water scarcity, I propose an idea to paint the roofs with a white paint of high quality such as Insultec so that it reduces the temperature inside the house and lowers the current costs as well as helps in accumulating the rainwater. It has been carried out successfully in certain rural parts of TamilNadu as part of my research with British Council & TERI and is very doable. As the solution involves saving both current (energy) as well as helps in rainwater harvesting (water), it is a very relevant and cheaper solution in the market.
